Aims: 1. To understand there was/were and wasn’t / weren’t for talking about things in the past
2. To understand past simple time expressions.
Date: The 25th of February, Wednesday.
Equipment: grammar table, pictures, cards, books.
T: Good morning dear boys and girls. I’m very glad to see you. How are you? What date is it today? What day is it today? Our theme is called “There was / were”.
T: Look at the blackboard. What are we going to speak about?
P1: We are going to speak about Road Safety.
T: That’s all right, today we are going to speak about Road Safety, but first of all let’s do our phonetic exercises and remember our poem.
2. Phonetic drill.
Twinkle, twinkle, traffic light
Standing on the corner bright
Green means go, we all know
Yellow means wait, even if you're late
Red means stop

T: So, we are at school again. Every day you must go to English course. But I think that your way to English course isn’t very safe. There is much transport in the street and there are dangerous places for you, that’s why it is necessary to learn the traffic rules.
P1. Yes, I agree with you. There are a lot of cars in the street.
P2. We all live in the town and it is dangerous to cross the road.
T: OK. Are you ready to speak? What words about road safety do you know?
P’s: (road, traffic light, cars, cross-road, bikers, drivers, pedestrians, transport etc.)
T: Well-done. Now children at the last lesson we have learned the means of transport. Let’s remember these words.
P’s: (a bus, a ferry, a helicopter, a motorbike, a plane, a taxi, a train, a tram, a horse, a ship, a tractor, a lorry)
T: Now dear pupils I see that you know the means of transport very well. But what else must we know to cross the road?
P2: Road signs.
T: Well-done. Everybody must know the ROAD SIGNS. They tell us what we can do, what we should do and what we mustn't do in the street. Let’s see who knows the Road Signs better? I’ll divide you into 3 groups and give you these signs and your task is to tell what the signs mean.
P1.The sign” No cycling.” You mustn’t ride a bike.
The sign “One way road.” You should go straight ahead.
The sign “Crossing” You should cross the street when the light is green.
The sign ‘Stop”. Drivers should stop before the sign.
The sign “Bus stop”. You can wait a bus here.
The sign “No walking”. You mustn’t walk.
The sign “Directions”.You should turn left.
The sign “Directions”.You should turn right.
The sign “The Traffic light”
Yellow light means-wait,
Green light means stop, red light means –go.
T: I see that you know the road signs. Thank you for your great work.
3. The new theme: Grammar: There was/were.

T: Look at the desk. What’s there on it? There is a book on it. Was there a pen there?
P: Yes, there is.
T: Are there copy books there?
P: Yes, there are two copy books there.
After minutes later…
T: What was there on the desk?
P: There was a book on it.
T: Was there a pen there?
P: Yes, there was.
T: Were there copy books?
P: Yes, there were two copy books there.
Task 2. Writing. Group work.
T: Granny is going to cook borsch for dinner, but she didn’t find all the foods for cooking in the fridge. Write sentences about what there was in the fridge, what there wasn’t in the fridge make up question forms using list of words.
